Megamind Opinion

***WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS AND THE OPINION OF A MAN WHO THINKS HE KNOWS WHAT HE’S TALKING ABOUT, RUN NOW.***

If you haven’t seen Megamind, give it a watch, and a rent at least when it comes out on DVD. This movie was FAR better than what I thought it would be, it’s very funny, and has an interesting, if not sometimes predictable plot. I expected more of a STUPID humorous movie…much like any of Ferrell’s OTHER films where he plays the idiotic unlikeable mindless dolt he USUALLY plays, like in Step Bros. and Talledaga Nights (though honestly, I was alright with Talledaga). But in this, Ferrell plays not only a SMART character, but one that you can actually feel sorry for, and not one you ever have the urge to just punch in the face. He has enough of that as it is in this movie.

The story pretty much to the bare bone, is the story of Megamind finally beating the super hero (by freaking KILLING him..kinda), realizing how boring life is without an enemy (because as shown with donuts, the hero was the ying to his yang), trying to make a NEW hero (which involves a pretty funny parody of Marlon Brando as Superman’s dad), and having that backfire (new super guy uses power for evil). This whole movie is about Megamind having almost everything he ever does backfiring and failing. He might as well have a birth certificate that has the world FAIL stamped on it. But his failures actually make you feel for him because he tries so hard BEFORE he fails. He puts a lot of effort into some of the things he does, and when they don’t succeed, you feel sorry for him (or at least I felt sorry for him). But when he succeeds, you’re glad he does (even if they are EEEVIL SUCCESSES *insert manic laughter*). That’s not usually something you get in a Will Ferrell movie, actual pity for the character. This is why I believe Will Ferrel is a superior VOICE actor than an onscreen actor.

Will Ferrell when on screen usually plays Will Ferrell, as in a very annoying, or stupid character. He plays this in almost all his films, with the exceptions being few, like Elf and Stranger than Fiction. But as a voice actor, he actually has the ability to be sincere, and has that ability to make you care about the character he’s playing, because he’s NOT playing the normal Will Ferrell character. He was great in The Oblongs, being a voice of reason in the series, and though I haven’t seen Curious George, I don’t think it’s possible to make the man in the yellow hat be annoying and stupid. I just think he’s more suited for voice acting roles than just acting roles, and it shows a LOT in Megamind. I actually didn’t want to see this film because he was in it. Now I will make SURE to watch his next film ONLY if it’s an ANIMATED movie.

The film wasn’t perfect, and the biggest problems I had were 1) Metroman (the superhero and Megamind’s arch nemisis) was an arrogant doucheasaurus, who I felt was kinda like the hero in Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along-Blog except not as a-holish, didn’t sing, but was just as arrogant, 2) Some parts of this film were way too predictable for me, 3) Some elements in the beginning of the film could’ve been reused for later parts, with Megamind’s Binky being the main thing (am I the only one who wanted to see him use that binky to blast Titan’s FACE OFF?). None of these problems are deal breakers at ALL though, as all of these are just personal knit-picks, and don’t really affect the movie at all as a whole.

The soundtrack is GREAT. Not ONLY is the orchestral score composed by Hans Zimmer, (guy who did music for the new Batman movies AND the Pirates of Caribbean series) but it also has some of the best ASS-KICKING rock songs ever made, including Highway to Hell by AC/DC (though it’s KINDA censored), Crazy Train from Ozzy of course, and my favorite, Welcome to the Jungle by Guns and Roses just to name a few. This ESPECIALLY was my favorite, for it was used for the climax of the movie, and NOTHING screams BAD ASS VILLIANLY and gets you PUMPED UP like some good ole’ GnR. Oh, and to a friend of mine, Mr. Bluesky is actually in this…so for YOU, that’s probably worth the admission price alone you damn addict.

All in all, this movie was pretty damn good. It set out to be an entertaining comedy movie, and it accomplished that and then some. The funny parts are funny, the badass parts are badass, and the sad parts are sad. And though some of the parts to me were predictable, those parts were things I WANTED to happen. It also shows Will Ferrell IS a good actor when it comes to VOICE work. Did I like this film? Hell yes. Is it the greatest film? Hell no. Do I recommend it? OF COURSE!

But of course, I am HAPPILLY willing to discuss this movie with others who have seen it. I know I left a LOT out, and there IS more to be discussed. But i only left so much out because I’d rather TALK about it to others than just put all my opinions down on paper…erm…internet text stuff. So please, all of your opinions are valued unless they’re not. If you think my opinions are wrong, okay. If you think I’m bad for liking ANY of Will Ferrell’s work,(OR hating his work) and are going to troll me for it, then all I have to say to you is a quote straight from this film. “Ooooh, I’m shaking in my custom made leather baby seal boots.”

Thank you for reading the musings of a man who thinks he knows what he’s talking about.

  1. I am a WHORE for that song...I also enjoyed Will's voice acting in The Oblongs, so I'll probably check this out some time when I have the cash.
